George Saulman’s Life and Legacy Honored by Members of Congress

HARRISBURG — Rep. Todd Stevens (R-Montgomery) recently paid tribute to the late George Soman, who served in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives from 1980 to 1994.

A longtime Ambler resident, Saurman graduated from Upper Darby High School and Ursinus College. He also served in the 65th Army Infantry Division in the European Theater of World War II from 1944 to 1946.

He ended up spending nearly 30 years in public service, serving as Mayor of Ambler for 11 years, Speaker of the Ambler Borough Council for 4 years, and Representative of Pennsylvania for 14 years.

“I first met George when I was an intern in his legislative branch when I was in college,” Stevens said. “It left an indelible mark on me to see him interact with voters and the passion he had for making the Commonwealth a better place to call home. , changed his college studies to government, eventually aiming to become a state legislator like George.

“My friendship with him is one that I have always cherished. He was a mentor, someone who always pushed me to be a better legislator and a better fight,” Stephens said. continued.

Saurman was actively involved with the Ambler Kiwanis Club, Montco SAAC, Ambler Chamber of Commerce, American Cancer Society, American Trauma Society, Wissahickon School Authority, and Calvary United Methodist Church. Saurman also helped start Rising Sun Youth Services at the Ambler Theater and senior games in Montgomery County.

“Even in retirement, George never rested,” Stevens said. “He remained very active in the community and authored three of his books in his lifetime. He is a shining example of how a life of public service and commitment to community can be enriched. is.”

Saurman died on October 3 at the age of 96.
