A former college football player was arrested for the murder of a student at Portland State University. Authorities believe he was dating before.
Amara Marque, a 19-year-old activist who dreams of making music, was shot deadly near a college campus early Monday and was identified by authorities the next day. When she was killed, she was pursuing her degree in Sonic Arts & Music Productions.
On Tuesday, an agent at the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office tracked Keenan Harpole on the property of Bend’s family, more than 100 miles from school. A 20-year-old boy who once ran back on the PSU football team agreed to turn himself into an authority and faced his second murder and illegal use of weapons.
Authorities said they were working with investigators who believed the killings were likely domestic violence.
According to her Marluke family, she and Harpole had an on-again and off-again relationship that began in the summer of 2021 at the beginning of her freshman year.
“They kept finding a way back to each other.” Amara’s aunt Melanie Henriksen told People.. “He was her first love, but there were many destructive elements early on.”
Harpole has been acquitted of the murder and has been detained without bail in Multnomah County Detention Center.
A statement Stephen Pearcy, the president of the university, confirmed that both Marluke and Harpole are PSU students.
“Amara was an artist, an activist and a vibrant member of our community. Her death is mourned by all of us,” Percy said.
“I am deeply affected by this tragedy of loss. It is heartbreaking to Amara’s family and everyone who knows her. I would like to express my deepest sympathies. We are as a campus community for healing. I will cooperate. “
Maruk also co-chaired the school’s Black Student Union and often posted about Black Lives Matter, in addition to other social justice issues on social media. The Oregonian report.
“You didn’t want to participate in the cause she was fighting because you couldn’t meet Amara and she could get everyone together,” said her mother, Amy.
“She was endlessly patient. She always taught me compassionately. You can talk [conversations] And you will learn. I miss those conversations with my girl forever. “
