New York (AP) — Details of over 500 million Facebook users have been found available on the hacker website.
This information seems to be a few years old, but it is another example of the vast amount of information collected by Facebook and other social media sites and the limits of the security of that information.
Dataset availability was first reported by Business Insider. The publication contains information from 106 countries, including phone numbers, Facebook IDs, names, locations, dates of birth, and email addresses.
Facebook has been tackling data security issues for years. In 2018, social media giants will be able to search for each other by phone number after it was revealed that political company Cambridge Analytica had unknowingly accessed information from up to 87 million Facebook users without their consent. The function has been disabled.
In December 2019, Ukrainian security researchers found a database on the open Internet containing the names, phone numbers, and unique user IDs of more than 267 million Facebook users (almost all US-based). I reported. It is unknown if the current data dump is associated with this database.
“This is old data previously reported in 2019,” a company based in Menlo Park, California said in a statement. “This issue was discovered and fixed in August 2019.”
