Excelter confirmed that the men’s basketball season lost to Chester 61-52 in the first round of the PIAA Class 5A playoffs in Chester on Tuesday.
First in the state since 1999, the Eagles (13-14) complete their second-half comeback against District 1 Champion Clippers (19-3), who held a 30-26 half-time lead. I couldn’t.
Excelter beat Chester 15-12 in the third quarter, finishing fourth with 42-41. The Clippers beat the Eagles 19-11 in the fourth quarter and cleared it up.
Anthony Caccese scored the team’s highest 16 points in the Exeter. Kevin Lacquer scored the game’s highest 17 points in Chester.
Colin Payne, who scored the highest score at 18.5 points per game for the Eagles, finished with 15 points. Payne scored 9 out of 14 points in the first quarter of Exeter.
Teddy Snyder made two 3 pointers and scored 8 points in the Exeter. One of Snyder’s three pointers came in the first quarter to help keep the Eagles in it. Chester led 19-14.
The Clippers will face Archbishop Ryan, the 75-48 winner, in West York on Friday of the second round.
Exeter, the 7th-placed team in District 3, has been aiming for the first state victory since reaching the Class B final in 1974.
