For almost four years, a well-known golfer who finished a round at the Reading Country Club had little choice but to drive somewhere else to find drinks and food.
Excelter TownshipOwning a club, has finally found a company that runs its restaurant business. This week, township supervisors approved a New Jersey-based contract Morning Star Golf & Hospitality LLC To take over that part of the business.
According to township manager Jeff Bartlett, this is a five-year contract that will pay the company $ 5,000 a month and give the company an incentive to exceed its performance goals.
The club restaurant has closed After December 2017Township acquired country club assets for about $ 12 million in 2006 when the town expelled JMH Inc., which once ran a ViVa restaurant in Wyomissing, in a liquor license dispute. The acquisition was due to expropriation and was a move to thwart plans to develop a 550 townhouse on the premises.
Morning Star operates private clubs and golf courses in 25 states in the United Kingdom and Japan. The golf club hosts tournaments for all major professional golf tours. Regionally, Morning Star operates golf clubs in Ben Salem, Back County.Cape May Court House, NJ and Somers Point, NJ
“They’ve been doing this for quite some years,” Bartlett said. “They may do everything, they may just run a golf course, or they may just have food and drink. It depends on the entity.”
According to Bartlett, Morning Star employs all employees, buys all food and drink, and bills the town. All income will be submitted to the township.
Exeter was courting the company to carry out the operation, Bartlett said, but many were not interested. Some wanted to run a golf business that they didn’t want to give up on township, while others hesitated because of the coronavirus pandemic.
“We’ve been playing golf in-house for a few years now and it’s going well,” says Bartlett. In its latest report on the golf business, Township said it had a year-to-date surplus of $ 164,135.
For three years, the restaurant was closed and golf outings were used outside catering companies. It will eventually come back in-house.
“We have lost all that income,” Bartlett said.
The plan will return to hosting a banquet in early 2022 with the wedding at a later date. The town still has a liquor license.
