Debra Todd Becomes Chief Justice of Pennsylvania

HARRISBURG, Pennsylvania (WHTM) — History was made in Pittsburgh on Friday when the daughter of a steelworker became Chief Justice of the Pennsylvania Supreme Court, ending a man who held the position for three centuries. I was.

Another gender barrier is gone in Pennsylvania when Debra Todd raises her hand.

“The Pennsylvania Supreme Court has not had a female Chief Justice in 300 years. The time has come,” Todd said.

With Todd’s seniority in the High Court, it’s time for her to be the boss.

Being Commissioner means overseeing every court across Pennsylvania and, like last week, appointing a new governor.

“I’m no better than any of my colleagues when it comes to voting cases,” Todd said. “When it comes to managing the system, the money stops here.”

The daughter of a steel worker, Debra McCloskey grew up in western Pennsylvania. Her dad was proud when she became her US Steel attorney. In 1999 she was elected to the Superior Court and in 2007 to the Pennsylvania Supreme Court.

“I hope that political and electoral issues can be resolved without going to court,” Todd added.

Todd is haunted by recent cases of elected officials and members of the public who suggest the High Court’s rulings were politically motivated and therefore tainted.

“I believe there are no Democratic or Republican justices on our court. We are all Pennsylvania Supreme Court justices,” Todd said.

Now I have a woman in charge. This is a milestone that reminds Todd of his days in elementary school choir.

“The song was ‘Any little boy can be president,’ and the boys sang solos and the girls were backup singers. At the time, it was kind of an expectation that the boys would achieve great things.” It was,” said Todd.

Combine Todd with House Democratic Leader Joanna McClinton and Senate Speaker Protemp Kim Ward, and women are no longer backups.

“Someday, perhaps soon, it will become normal when we talk about women holding high leadership positions. We are waiting for that moment when we are headed for it.

Todd is no longer in the elementary school choir, but she is said to still have a beautiful voice.

When asked by abc27 if he would sing a few bars of his favorite song, Todd said, “No, I don’t sing a few bars. I love the song ‘I Hope You Dance.’ Because as a mother, she thinks of her daughter and wants her daughter to fulfill her dreams,” concludes Todd.

We’ve made a lot of progress in Pennsylvania, but we still have a lot of work to do. Pennsylvania has never elected a woman or person of color as governor or senator.
