Warwick senior football player continues to persevere despite severe car accident in July

Lancaster, PA (WGAL) — Coming off a successful junior season playing linebacker at Warwick High School, Mahkel Tate was looking forward to his senior year and the chance to get his name out to more colleges with hopes of earning a scholarship. However, everything changed when he was involved in a car accident while traveling to his cousin’s birthday party in late July.“We were waiting at a red light and this is all I remember because it feels like a dream, it doesn’t feel real,” Tate said. “I look to my left and see a car coming and it’s speeding. My cousins said that I screamed ‘There’s a car’ and we got smacked and then, I went unconscious from there until the next day.”When he woke up in the hospital, doctors gave him the news that he had sustained a broken neck, a brain bleed and several other injuries. “The first question I asked, I told them to get this {neck brace} off me because I woke up and had this on,” Tate said. “So, the neurologist comes in, and I’m like, ‘When can I play football again?’ and he was like, you’re not having a 2023 season.”Even though he won’t be suiting up with his teammates under the lights on Friday night, he was still voted as a team captain, attends practices and games and helps to coach the defense.“Adversity like this, until you have it, you really don’t know how you’re going to react and what it’s going to do to you,” Warwick head coach Bob Locker said. “He stepped up and decided he was going to do everything in his capabilities to be a great teammate, to try to be a leader.”Locker said he has known Mahkel since he was in elementary school and it’s been a blessing seeing him grow up and become the person he is.“I would see this kid out playing football at recess, we were talking and he said, ‘Someday, I’m going to come play for you,” Locker said. “One of the things I hope for him is down the road, I think he’d be a tremendous football coach. He understands people and is also knowledgeable and genuine.”Mahkel said he plans on playing football again at the collegiate level, but right now, he’s focused on his rehab and keeping a positive attitude despite going through a life-changing event.“To be honest, I can’t just go around moping everywhere and just feeling sad and sorry for myself,” Tate said. “I was just like, I’m going to pray to God, I’m alive, so I’m going to be here and I’m just going to keep working and strive to get better. I’m just going to hold my head up high and do what’s best and do what I can do even if I’m off the field not doing what I normally do day-to-day.”
