Lehigh Valley Zoo Adds Antelopes, Alpacas

Lehigh Valley Zoo officials have reason to welcome and appreciate the arrival of a rare antelope and two alpacas this season.

Eclipse, a scimitar-horned oryx, was born on November 9, according to a news release. At the time of the announcement last week, the calf and his mother, Too Haute, were doing well. Once the pair bonded with the rest of the herd, the calves and mothers were expected to join the remaining antelope herds on display.

The oryx is considered an “endangered” species of antelope. The zoo, located in Schnexville, North Whitehall Township, participates in the Scimitar Horned Oryx Species Survival Planning Program, a collaboration between Aquarium Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) accredited facilities, to provide animals for release into the wild. is supporting

The zoo is part of a breeding program that helps keep captive populations genetically diverse and demographically stable, according to zoo officials.

In other wildlife news, two alpacas have arrived. A 4-year-old Illuminati and he’s a 6-year-old Havoc. They join White Lightning, a 15-year-old alpaca who inhabits the Andes mountains of central and southern South America.
