Los Angeles (AP) — For the first time in two years, the Academy Awards unveiled the red carpet at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles in response to the film academy’s desire to return to the regular Oscars. Except for everything that has changed.

As always, the 94th Academy Awards television broadcast will begin at 8 pm EDT at ABC. Early arrival has already filled the red carpet before the show. In the warm California sun, Hollywood rituals of charm and celebration began to sway.

But there’s little else about how this year’s Oscar progresses. One hour before the broadcast begins, attendees will meet in Dolby to announce eight awards and acceptance speeches. These speeches will be edited into a broadcast that producer Wilpacker promised to be a tight three-hour broadcast.

This is one of many changes, both subtle and structural, before and after this year’s ceremony. After a two-year pandemic, and a record low-rated socially distant 2021 edition, the Academy Awards are popping on an improved television broadcast where streaming services are expected to get the best photos for the first time. Trying to regain a place of exhilaration of culture.

It’s not easy. The film industry has recovered significantly from the 2021 pandemic, but despite the biggest hits in a few years on Spider-Man: Noway Home, the rebound is on track. According to the Film Association, the global film industry sold about half the tickets last year. That was $ 21.3 billion in 2021, compared to $ 42.3 billion in 2019. Hollywood has pushed more top movies directly into the home than ever before. Half of the 10 Best Work Award candidates of the year were streamed at or near the release. Even the movie academy has completely moved to a streaming platform for voters rather than a DVD screener.

Then there is the challenge of gaining worldwide attention for Hollywood’s self-blessing night, after a two-year pandemic, and while the Russian war is devastating Ukraine. Packer said the war in Ukraine would be recognized in honor during the broadcast.

Netflix’s “Power of the Dog”, Jane Campion’s Gothic Western, has 12 major nominations and a chance to win the highest award. But all the momentum is in Sian Heder’s Deaf family drama “CODA”. It boasts only three nods, but is considered a favorite. The victory will be a victory for Apple TV +, which bought the movie at the Sundance Film Festival last year and promoted it to the members of the Academy in a big way.

But expect most of the night’s awards to go to Dennis Villeneuve’s epic science fiction epic “Dune.” Cleaning up in the technical category is your favorite odds.

A few years later, Oscar relies on a trio of Amy Schumer, Wanda Sykes, and Regina Hall to host the broadcast. Broadcasts are streamed with provider certification on platforms such as Hulu Live TV, YouTubeTV, and The producer also sang a song nominated alongside a group of star-studded performers such as Billie Eilish and Beyonce, and the “Encanto” cast sang Lin-Manuel Miranda’s blockbuster “Don’t Talk About Bruno.” I will play.

It will be a staggered start, with stars invading Dolby at different times. ABC’s red carpet pre-show runs from 6:30 pm to 8:00 pm, with the first hour of the award taking place in the theater between 7:00 pm and 8:00 pm. The news of these winners will first be disseminated on social media and later incorporated into television broadcasts. To accommodate the shift, the red carpet will also open an hour earlier than usual at 4 pm in the east.

A readjusted approach that wasn’t very popular with some academy members should help with the logistics of some complex red carpets. The academy wants to give each winner an uncompromising moment and encourages attendees to be seated by 7 pm. Some stars, such as Jessica Chastain, the “Eyes of Tammy Fay” nominee, mean that the artist of “Tami Fay” misses the presentation of the best hair and makeup awards nominated.

This is one of eight pre-show categories distributed while producers call it “Golden Hour.” Others include film editing, sound, original scores, production design, live action shorts, animated shorts, and documentary shorts.

Nicholas Britell, who was nominated for a “Don’t Look Up” score, shrugged while laughing on the red carpet and said, “We’re heading. We’ll see what happens.” “We are all learning. We are all learning.”

Already among Dolby was Donald Mowat, who was nominated for “Dune” hair makeup.

“I’ve been in this business for 35 years,” Mowat said. “This is already an Oscar for me.”

Earlier this month, more than 70 Oscar winners, including James Cameron, Kathleen Kennedy and Guillermo del Toro, warned that the change would make some candidates “second-class citizens.”

Behind the change is a vigilance against Oscar’s plunge rating. Drops are common to all major network award shows, but last year’s show attracted only about 10 million viewers. This is less than half of the 23.6 million people in the previous year. Ten years ago, it was close to 40 million.

Some have argued that blockbusters like “Spider-Man: No Way Home” should be nominated for Best Work for this year’s award in order to regain Oscar’s status. It’s just for visual effects.

Instead, a wide range of films are sought, from the hot-selling Netflix apocalyptic comedy Don’t Look Up to the acclaimed three-hour Japanese drama Drive My Car. increase.

One of the producers’ promises is that the final prize for the night will be the best work. Last year’s show ended awkwardly with the unexpected presentation of the Best Actor Award to the non-existent Anthony Hopkins.
