Philadelphia-Dwayne Haskins continued to push to the backup quarterback spot on Thursday night, throwing 161 yards and a touchdown to beat the Pittsburgh Steelers 24-16 against the Philadelphia Eagles.

Ben Roethlisberger played in Pittsburgh’s second pre-season match. Mason Rudolph has been a backup for the team over the last three seasons and may continue his work. Haskins, however, is giving Rudolph a little push in his attempt to win a backup spot.

The Steelers got a boost during the game when they agreed to buy linebacker Joe Schobert from Jacksonville Jaguars, according to people familiar with the deal. The person spoke to the Associated Press on Thursday night, subject to anonymity. Neither side has officially closed the deal.

The Steelers needed depth inside the linebackers after veteran Vince Williams suddenly retired shortly before the training camp. Williams’ departure left Pittsburgh, with Devin Bush and Robert Spillane starting from inside the linebackers, with little experience behind them.

Eagles coach Nick Sirianni made his sideline debut on behalf of Doug Pederson. Pederson was fired in January less than three years after leading the Eagles to the franchise’s only Super Bowl title.

Sirianni turned 40 in June and is the youngest head coach in Philadelphia since Dick Vermeal in 1976. This was the first game he played at all levels.

He has a young QB leading in Philadelphia. Jalen Hurts played two series, with a modest 3 of 7 at 54 yards. He hit the tight-end Zach Ertz in the middle of 34 yards and dropped the pass on the receiver in the next two attempts.

Last year’s second round draft topic, Hearts, finished 1-3 and the less injured team finished 4-11-1. He completed 6 touchdowns with 1,061 yards and 4 intercepts on 52% of the passes. He also ran for 354 yards and three TDs.

Hearts hasn’t been officially started, even though he actually took a snap of all the first teams and got off to a pre-season start.

Joe Flacco, who threw 25 touchdown passes against the Steelers in the 11th season with Baltimore Ravens, beat Quez Watkins with a 79-yard touchdown and a 10-0 lead. The flacco signed to play behind Hearts was 10 of 17 with 178 yards and touchdown.

Jake Elliott kicked two 47-yard field goals and a 50-yard goal for the Eagles.

Philadelphia’s third QB, Nick Mullens, was passed by Justin Rain in the third quarter. Jaylen Samuels scored from one yard, giving the Steelers a 21-16 lead.

Call the hall

Aggressive linemen Jon Runyan and Tora Thomas are inducted into the Eagles Hall of Fame this year. They will be introduced on October 14th, when the Eagles host the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Runyan and Thomas started a regular season game of franchise record 134 together from 2000 to 2008. During that stretch, they helped lead the Eagles to seven playoffs, five division titles, five conference championship games, and a Super Bowl berth.
