Dua Lipa, Arlo Parks, British Brit Awards Celeste Lead Race – NBC10 Philadelphia

Singer-songwriters Dua Lipa, Arlo Parks and Celeste have led the Brit Awards competition and have been nominated for three British Music Awards.

Three British women were nominated for the best female solo artist and album of the year on Wednesday. Lipa is also aiming for the “physical” best brit single. Parks and Celeste, who were nominated for Academy Awards for “Hear My Voice” from the movie “The Trial of the Chicago 7”, are candidates for groundbreaking artist trophies.

Other triple nominations on the list are DJ Joel Corry and rap duo Young T & Bugsey.

Winners will be announced on May 11th at a ceremony featuring a live musical performance at the O2 Arena in London and a limited social distance audience. The event will be one of the first direct award shows since the coronavirus pandemic began over a year ago.

The British are a clever showcase of British talent, but nominations have been criticized in the past for not reflecting the diversity of British music. In 2017, the academy of more than 1,000 music industry professionals to select winners was expanded to increase gender balance and diversity.

Nonetheless, last year the show was criticized for not recognizing women, and this year’s album’s finalist list did not include female performers. This year, the category includes four female acts: Parks, Celeste, Lipa, and Jessie Ware. J Hus is the only male performer nominated.
