Pittsburgh (KDKA) – A transition period to bring employees back to the office is underway, creating a dilemma for employees and their bosses.

Some people may hesitate to return for strictly financial reasons.

In addition to the clothing you need, there are other costs associated with getting back to work.

“There are parking lots and gas prices are clearly rising, but it certainly costs money,” said one local worker.

“It’s not cheap because there are hundreds of people a month,” said another local worker.

KDKA’s John Shumway: “Do employers need to give them some compensation?”

“Well, they don’t have the legal requirements to compensate for it, I remember we lived in the pre-COVID world,” said Zachary Bombatch, a human resources development organization in southwestern Pennsylvania. Told.

Mr Bombatch said employers need to be aware of the ongoing talent war.

“Maybe that’s what they were talking about. We’ll increase the rewards to get you back to the office,” he said.

Employees aren’t just looking for post-pandemic money. They want flexibility and they have it.

“Basically, you can always work from home,” said a local worker.

“I come two days a week and then work from home 3,” said a Pittsburgh worker.

“I think employers facing the biggest challenges and the biggest sales are having the hardest time stopping remote work altogether on a particular day,” says Bonbatch. “After that day, you have to be in the office five days a week all day, which is inflexible.”

However, there are some issues with providing that flexibility.

Two years of work at home is at the expense of that.

“Burnout is a reality, and burnout is only increasing,” Bonbatch said.

Bombatch added that we all learned the shortcomings of working from home.

“Maybe it’s much harder to quit or cut off duty when you’re just commuting from the kitchen to your home office,” he said.

So while saving on petrol, parking, and commuting time, Bonbatch says there are a lot of statistics that work days at home are definitely long.

“I don’t care about traveling, I miss being in downtown,” said a local worker.

Even those who want to return to the office want the option to work remotely.

“I think the lack of flexibility keeps many people away from these more demanding employers,” Bonbatch said.

Flexibility is difficult for some employers, he said.

“If you’re returning some individuals to the office and allowing others to work from home,” he said. “You have a good rationale for that, and you should document that rationale and have a rationale for why you are staying some and allowing some to stay at home. Is good.”

The solution seems to provide an incentive to return to the office by payment or other means, but once they’re in place, are they one-off?

On the other side of the coin, are you paying less for those who work at home?

Employers try to stick to their workforce, so there is no easy answer.
