Body of girl believed to be that of toddler lost in Pennsylvania floods found in river | Pennsylvania

A girl’s body was found in the Delaware River on Friday, believed to be a 2-year-old, one of two infants swept out of a family’s car in a flash flood last weekend, officials said.

Authorities said at an evening press conference that the body was found earlier in the evening near a sewage treatment plant in Philadelphia, about 30 miles from where Matilda Shales was taken away.

Because of the physical characteristics, authorities believe the body is that of Matilda. The Philadelphia coroner is scheduled to perform an autopsy on Saturday.

The search continues for Matilda’s nine-month-old brother Conrad.

Upper Makefield Fire Chief Tim Brewer said the family in Charleston, South Carolina, was visiting relatives and friends when they encountered a “wall of water.”

His mother, Katie Selley, 32, also died in the floods, officials said.

Brewer said the children’s father, Jim Shields, grabbed the couple’s four-year-old son, while Celie and her grandmother grabbed the other children. Ms. Shields and her young son were safely evacuated, but Ms. Seeley and her grandmother were swept away. Her grandmother survived.

Four other people drowned in the area, according to the Bucks County coroner’s office. Enzo Depiero, 78, and Linda Depiero, 74, who live in Newtown. Yuko Love (64), who lives in New Town. and Susan Bernhardt, 53, of Titusville, New Jersey.

A suburb about 35 miles (60 km) north of Philadelphia was flooded with support, especially on social media, following the death and search for a child.
