Community Health Authority shares food safety tips during power outages

Mahoning County, Ohio (WKBN) – The Mahoning County Department of Health continues to share food safety information. Massive blackout in Valley.

The department says to keep refrigerator and freezer doors closed during shutdowns to maintain low temperatures.

Items in the freezer are safe for up to 48 hours when the door is closed and 24 hours when half full. The refrigerator keeps food safe for he four hours.

After powering on, check the temperature inside the appliance. Health officials say you shouldn’t taste food to determine if it’s safe.

Meat, soft cheese, milk, opened formula, eggs, cooked or cut produce, etc. must be discarded. If it has been frozen before, it should be safe to refreeze if it has ice crystals.

Foods such as hard cheeses, fruit juices, most condiments, breads and raw foods should be safe at 40 degrees or more for 2 hours or more.
