Infielder Jonathan Villar was added to the injured list due to an unfortunate accident in the weight room.
The exercise band used by Biller snapped back into his mouth, causing anomalous injuries that required significant dental care. The Chicago Cubs placed him in the IL for 10 days, dating back to Friday, before Monday’s doubleheader against Milwaukee Brewers.
The Cubs remembered outfielder Nelson Velázquez, who made his major league debut with a right fielder starting Game 1. Velasquez rates the Cubs’ 16th-ranked prospect as follows: MLB.com Last year I was the MVP of the Arizona Fall League. He was promoted to Triple A in early May, scoring .253 in 41 double A and triple A games with 9 doubles, 1 triple, 12 homer runs, 25 RBIs and OPS.914.
“Everything is a dream come true,” Velázquez said. “That’s all I wanted in my life.”
Obviously Happy Bellasukes reunites with longtime minor league baseball Teammate Christopher Morel..
“He’s my best friend,” said Velasquez, who got off the two lockers from Morel.
The right-handed Matt Swarmer contract was chosen from Triple A Iowa. The 28-year-old, a former 19-round pick, got off to a start in his first match against the Brewers. Right-handed Ethan Roberts (inflammation of the right shoulder) was transferred to IL for 60 days, creating a spot for 40 Swarmers.
Swarmer posted 2.08 ERA in 9 games (5 starts) at Iowa.
“He is reportedly throwing the ball really well,” said manager David Ross. “I think he made some adjustments in the game. He’s having a good season.”
Right-handed Anderson Espinoza also grew up from Double A, Tennessee and won his first Major League Baseball call as the 27th man in the doubleheader. The 24-year-old Espinoza was acquired from San Diego Padres for Jake Marisnick in July.
“It was a morning to congratulate the many who came here,” Ross said. “I am happy for many who have worked hard and you can come out and be rewarded in an environment like today.”
