Q: Q: I would like to work with my children to set some reasonable and healthy goals for the year. What is a good thing to try?
A: A: The beginning of the year is a great opportunity to help children focus on developing good habits.
As a pediatrician and mother of three children, I know how important it is to set healthy goals with the children and to be realistic about those goals. .. Depending on their age, children can track sticker charts and earn praise and rewards when they reach these goals.
It is advisable to sit with the children and choose some goals they want to set. If it’s too overwhelming to think of them as a solution, talk about them as a goal and make it fun.
Engaging children in the decision-making process and making these goals fun for the whole family can turn these resolutions into long-term habits.
Here are some ideas you can suggest to your child, depending on their age.
• Put the toys back in place and clean them.
• I would like my parents to help me brush my teeth twice a day.
• After going to the bathroom, wash your hands before eating.
• Try new foods, especially vegetables of different colors.
• Help clean up the table when you’re done eating.
• I will be kind to all animals. I first ask the owner if they can pet their animals.
• Hold an adult’s hand whenever you cross the street.
• We will do our best to be kind to children who need friends and other children who look sad or lonely.
• Talk to your parents or another trusted adult when you need help or are scared.
5-12 years old:
• I drink water every day and drink healthy drinks like milk with my meals.
• Find physical activity (playing tag, skipping rope, dancing, biking, etc.) and your favorite sport and do it at least three times a week.
• Always wear a helmet when riding a bicycle, scooter or skateboard.
• Make friends by talking to and inviting children who are having a hard time making friends.
• I talk to adults about the bullying I see and hear to do what I can to keep everyone’s school safe.
• Keep your personal information safe and avoid sharing your name, home address, school name, or phone number online. Also, I never send my photo to anyone chatting online without asking my parents if it’s okay.
• If you have problems or feel stressed, try to talk to your parents or a trusted adult.
• I will do my best to comply with home rules regarding video games and internet use.
13 years and over:
• I try to eat 2 servings of fruit and 2 servings of vegetables every day. Drink sodas and fruit drinks only at special times.
• Do your best to care for your body through fun physical activity and eating the right type of food.
• I strive to choose what I enjoy in educational and quality non-violent TV shows and video games. I spend only an hour or two on these activities every day. I promise to respect the household rules regarding video games and the use of the internet.
• I try to get 8 to 10 hours of sleep every night.
• I support my community. Work with community groups and others to help those in need, and take the time to help others.
• If you feel angry or stressed, take a break and find useful ways to deal with the stress, such as exercising, reading, writing in your diary, or talking about problems with your parents or friends.
• When I find my friends struggling, being bullied, or making dangerous choices, I look for a trusted adult so I can try to help.
• Be careful about who you date. I respect the other person and try not to force them to do what they don’t want to do. I hope they will be treated the same in return.
• I resist pressure from peers to try drugs, alcohol, smoking or e-cigarettes.
• Do not send or speak text messages on your mobile phone while driving and always wear your seat belt.
