According to authorities, Gendron is a white man, and the FBI is investigating this shooting as a hate crime and a radically motivated violent extremism.

According to police, Gendron has traveled “hours” to carry out an attack at Tops Friendly Markets on Jefferson Avenue.

Supermarkets are located primarily in the Black district, about three miles north of downtown Buffalo. The surrounding area is primarily a residential area, close to the Family Dollar Store and Fire Department.

“This was pure evil. It was a racially motivated hate crime,” said Erie County Sheriff John Garcia.

At around 2:30 pm, Gendron got out of the car at the supermarket parking lot, police officials said. According to police, he was heavily armed and wore tactical equipment such as the camera-equipped helmet used for livestreaming shootings. According to law enforcement sources, Gendron wore a bulletproof vest.

Gendron is said to have shot four people in the parking lot. Three of those victims died on the scene. One was injured but survived.

Police say the suspect went in and started shooting customers.

According to police, a retired Buffalo police officer, who had been hired as a guard, fired with Gendron and attacked him, but was unable to stop him due to the suspect’s tactical equipment. After that, Gendron was allegedly shot dead by the guards.

Police said the suspect passed through the rest of the store and eventually returned to the supermarket.

Buffalo police then pulled the suspect into the front yard of the store. Gendron allegedly put a gun on his neck, but police officers told him to drop the gun.

According to police, Gendron then surrendered after taking off some of his tactical equipment.

A total of 13 people were shot dead. Ten victims were sentenced to death at the scene. Buffalo police commissioner Joseph Gramagria said the other three victims suffered potentially life-threatening injuries.

The three injured victims were stably taken to the Erie County Medical Center. As of 7:30 pm, one victim had been discharged.

Four of the victims of the shooting were clerk, including security guards. The remaining victims were customers.

Eleven of the victims are African-American and two are Caucasian.

“We are shocked and deeply saddened by this pointless violence,” said Tops Friendly Markets. “Our thoughts and prayers are directed at the victims and their families.”

Twitch, the platform used by shooters to livestream their attacks, issued the following statement:
