Brent Pry of Pennsylvania State University is reportedly leaving to become Virginia Tech’s head coach

Brent Pry, a defense coordinator who has been an assistant to James Franklin since 2011, will leave Pennsylvania State University to become the head football coach of Virginia Tech, according to reports on Tuesday.

A 51-year-old from Altoona, Ply has been a defensive coordinator for the Nittany Lions since 2016 and has been a linebacker coach since hiring Franklin in 2014.

Pennsylvania State University is ranked 4th in Red Zone Defense, 7th in Score Defense (16.8), and 8th in Pass Defense Efficiency this season.

Ply will replace Justin Fuente, who was dismissed two weeks ago, this season as Hawkeys 5-5 and head coach 43-31 in six years.

Ply began his coaching career as a student assistant in Buffalo in 1992 after his career was cut off due to an injury. He started professionally as a defensive coach in East Stroudsburg in 1993-94, when Franklin was the team’s quarterback.

He was a graduate assistant at Virginia Tech for three seasons (1995-97), stopping at West Carolina, Louisiana Lafayette, Memphis, and Georgia Southern.

Ply joined Vanderbilt’s staff in 2011, when Franklin was hired as head coach there and served as co-defense coordinator and linebacker coach. When Franklin was hired by Lions in 2014, he held the same position at Pennsylvania State University.

After Bob Shoop departed for Tennessee following the 2015 season, Ply has been promoted to defensive coordinator and has helped Pennsylvania State University become 53-21 in the last six seasons.

Ply has coached linebackers at Pennsylvania State University such as All-American Mika Parsons, former governor Mifflin’s outstanding Jan Johnson, Cam Brown, Jason Cabinda, Mike Hull, and Brandon Bell.

Ply is the latest Franklin Assistant Coach to join Marshall’s Charles Huff, Old Dominion’s Ricky Rahne, and former Oregon attack coordinator Joe Moorehead, a former Mississippi head coach. is.

Ply’s first match at Virginia Tech will face Old Dominion and Rane.
