“They are very expressive and there is great joy in their expression,” said Randy Mascorella, Executive Director of Special Olympics New Mexico.

Down syndrome is the condition of having an extra copy of the 21st chromosome, which can cause mental and physical differences.

“Once you feel accepted, they are incredibly kind and will never forget you,” Mascorella said. “You see in them a tremendous amount of not just determination, but stubborn determination. It doesn’t change a person’s mind.”

Inclusion is a barrier that people with Down syndrome are still trying to break.

“If we don’t limit their potential, they are capable of far more than we give them credit for,” Mascorella said.
