Boxer Senator Manny Pacquiao Candidates for President of the Philippines | Sports

Manila, Philippines — Senator Manny Pacquiao, a boxing icon in the Philippines, says he will run for president in the 2022 elections.

Pacquiao accepted his PDP-Laban party nomination at the national convention on Sunday, saying the Filipinos are waiting for a change of power.

“I’m a fighter and I’m always a fighter inside and outside the ring,” Pacquiao, 42, said in a speech.

“We need a government that serves the people with integrity, compassion and transparency,” he added.

Pacquiao is the PDP-Laban president, led by him and Senator Aquilino “Koko” Pimentel III.

Another faction of the same party earlier this month nominated President Rodrigo Duterte as vice presidential candidate and Senator Bong Go, a former aide to Duterte, as presidential candidate.

Duterte, whose constitution prohibits him from seeking a second six-year term, accepted the nomination, but Go refused to run for president.

Duterte will lead a brutal campaign against illegal drugs and “die first” before facing an international court the day after the International Criminal Court announced last week that it would investigate crimes against humanity related to the crackdown left behind. Thousands of people who said they wanted to die.

Pacquiao accused his former ally, the Durterte administration, of exacerbating corruption in the Philippines.

To critics who doubt his qualifications, a famous boxer told him that his personal experience of suffering would better prepare him to understand the suffering of people, and fight poverty and corruption.

“In my life, I haven’t retreated to any battle,” Pacquiao said.

He warned the politician he was responsible for corruption, “I’ll be in jail with him soon.”

A rival faction supporting Duterte has previously said that Pacquiao and his allies would petition the Election Commission to declare an illegitimate officer in the ruling party.
