Phillies beat Rockies as Turner, Stott, Clemens homers

DAN GELSTON (AP Sports Writer)

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Bryson Stott knew all too well that his first month in Philadelphia wouldn’t give Trea Turner a hard time with shortstops missing his power.

A lesser-known home run hitter, Stott, like Turner, had just one hit this season.

“If you’re one of the best shortstops in the game, you know you’re there, if not the best,” Stott said. “No one cares about that.”

The two were again tied, two each. With this, the Phillies were on his third straight win.

Turner and Cody Clemens hit solo homers, Stott and Brandon Marsh hit two-run shots, and Zach Wheeler had 11 strikeouts to lead the Philadelphia Phillies to a 9-3 victory over the Colorado Rockies.

The Phillies took the final three games of a four-game series, winning 6 of 8 overall. Because I recovered from my slow start and started making progress in my rotation.

Wheeler (2-1) survived four rough innings — handing Yonathan Daza to allow three runs — in his 17th career double-digit strikeout game and ninth for the Phillies. finished.

“Close your eyes in the fourth,” said Wheeler, who induced 23 swing-and-misses in six innings, a season-high for a Phillies pitcher.

Another silver lining is the Phillies power recovery. Turner and Clemens came out of the drought a day after Nick Castellanos and Christian Pache hit their first homers of the season.

Turner, who hit 21 home runs in 160 games with the Dodgers last season, connected in Philadelphia’s first inning since the star shortstop signed a $300 million 11-year deal.

Clemens fired a rocket to right on the double. Both home runs came from Rockies starter Jose Ureña (0-4).

Wheeler, who made his 200th career start, slinked through most of the four innings he hit with the bases loaded. Harold Castro added a sacrifice fly and Ezekiel Tovar lined up an RBI single to give him a 3-2 lead.

JT Realmuto tied the game in the bottom of the fourth with an RBI forceout, and Alec Bohm made it 4-3 in the same inning with an RBI groundout.

Greg Soto, Jose Alvarado and Luis Ortiz each went scoreless innings in relief.

In the seventh inning, Bohm hit an RBI double and Stott hit his second home run of the season to take a 7–3 lead. Marsh went 9–3 in the eighth inning with his fourth home run of the season.

“At the beginning of the year, the bats were a little cold,” Marsh said. “It’s good to see people knocking and getting on base and moving around.”

long weekend

The Rockies lost 11 of 12 games and hit eight homers in the final three games of the series.

“We are fighting hard,” said manager Bud Black. “We had some chances for bigger hits to extend our lead or get more runs, but they didn’t happen. It means I have to pitch well and improve my at-bats.”

home cloud

44,618 fans flocked to Philadelphia, drawing a crowd of at least 43,000 at Citizens Bank Park this season. That’s only three he’s surpassed the regular season crowd of at least 43,000 during the 2022 season.
