New Kensington, PA (KDKA) — A short video shot the night the child in New Kensington disappeared shows an individual who says investigators may have the information they need.
This video is from a doorbell camera across the street where 9-year-old Azuree Charles lived, near where the child’s body was found on Wednesday morning.
This shows an individual moving quickly along the sidewalk before cutting between residential units in the East Ken Manor district. The time stamp indicates that the video was shot after 9 pm on Tuesday. The boy’s mother apparently told police that she last met him around 10 pm that night.
Police do not call the individual in this video a suspect. They say they just want to identify them to talk to them to find out if they saw or noticed something in the area.
Meanwhile, Charles’ father, Jean Charles, is in Westmoreland County Jail and has been charged with child danger and assault.
According to court records, Jean attacked a 9-year-old boy last year and beat his child violently, causing his eyes to turn black. Investigators say the reason for the attack was that Charles was angry with the child’s noise.
Charles was arrested Thursday, although the incident was alleged to have occurred in December 2021. He told police he was homeless, but police said the assault took place in the house where Azul lived. However, it is important to note that the boy Jean was allegedly assaulted and police did not say if Azul was the same child.
Police have not yet nominated Azuree’s death suspects, but say they have “interested people.”
KDKA-TV contacted the detective. The detective said he does not think the community is currently threatened. However, sources have told KDKA-TV that New Kensington police are stepping up patrols to reassure their parents.
