Several cars were stolen while driving in Harrisburg over the weekend, including one with a 4-month-old child in it. Harrisburg police said the child was found in an abandoned minivan after a search lasting about two hours, but all could have been avoided if the vehicle had been secured and the child had not been left alone.
A minivan removed from a convenience store on Sixth and McRae Streets Saturday night was one of several thefts involving unattended moving vehicles, police said.
Police Lt. Kyle Gawchu said the incident was particularly egregious because the baby was in a minivan, but a car can be stolen in as little time as someone can go to a store and buy something. It also emphasizes the fact that
“It only takes a few seconds for someone to see your car driving unattended, jump in your car, and drive off obviously you don’t know anything about it. It’s very important to keep our cars safe, whether it’s on the street or in a parking lot,” he said.
Three juveniles were arrested Sunday morning in connection with the theft of unmanned vehicles on Second and Maclay streets. Gautsch did not know if these boys were responsible for other vehicle thefts.
