Surprise, Arizona (NEXSTAR) —According to officials, a 90-minute drive-by shooting in three cities in western Phoenix on Thursday killed one, injured three, and injured nine.
The suspect was detained, but authorities said it was unclear if the person was responsible for all shootings.
The suspect’s name was not immediately announced.
Police stations in Peoria, Surprise, and Glendale, along with the Arizona Department of Public Security, were investigating shootings in their respective cities.
Peoria police spokesman Brandon Shephert said at a press conference Thursday afternoon that authorities were investigating at least eight separate shooting scenes.
He said four people had gunshot wounds and one of them died. Shephert said the dead victims were found along the highway. Shephert emphasized that the information is preliminary and that detectives are still working to stitch the timelines together. The investigation is even more complicated as it involves multiple jurisdictions.
Other victims suffered various injuries, including hitting debris, she added, and shooting could be considered a “drive-by” style attack.
Banner Health officials said they had accepted nine patients at three hospitals. However, the extent of the victims’ injuries and their condition were not immediately revealed.
“Our thoughts are with them,” Shephert said of the victim’s family. “This is trying for everyone.”
Surprise police reported that the two were shot dead around noon on Thursday.
Witnesses provided authorities with a description of the escape vehicle, a white SUV, and the suspect was detained after a surprise traffic outage. Sgt. Tommy Hale of the Surprise Police Department said a local firefighter who saw a warning with a description of the vehicle found the SUV and called.
Hale said the driver was the only occupant of the vehicle and was detained without incident.
When asked if there were multiple suspects in the shooting, Shephert said he didn’t think so.
“There was a very good explanation of the people, vehicles and license plates given,” Shephert said. “I don’t think anyone else was involved.”
Shephert said the FBI was also involved in the investigation.
