At least 18 children and a teacher were killed when gunmen fired at an elementary school in Texas, officials said. Officials said the shooter was killed on the scene by law enforcement officials.
Authorities saidAfter shooting her grandmother and crashing her car near the school, she entered Rob Elementary School in Yuwalde, Texas, at around 11:32 am local time. A Texas Public Safety Agency official said the shooter fired at “children, teachers, and anyone in the way” when they entered school.
“He was shooting everyone,” officials said.
Officials said the suspect, who wore a bulletproof vest, set fire to law enforcement officers and several police officers were shot dead. The suspect was finally shot deadly on the scene.
Texas Governor Greg Abbott said the shooter was an 18-year-old man who lived in Yuvalde, about an hour and a half west of San Antonio. He said a suspect he named Salvador Ramos had abandoned his car, entered school with a pistol and perhaps a rifle, and fired “terrifying and incomprehensible.”
Two law enforcement sources told CBS News that the suspect had a pistol, an AR-15 assault rifle, and a large magazine.
According to UvaldeCISD Police Chief Pedro Arredondo, the school teaches second, third and fourth grade students.
Aledondo confirmed that the suspect had died and said investigators believed he had acted alone.
President Biden accused the shooting in a speech on Tuesday night.
