The short par-3 15th hole had many challenges at the US Open

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The Los Angeles Country Club has two of the longest par-3 holes in U.S. Open history. Saturday was the shortest.

The 15th hole played for 81 yards and replaced Pebble Beach’s 7th hole which played for 92 yards in the final round of 2010.

“I’m the happiest I’ve ever been in my life to put it on the green,” said par winner Bryson DeChambeau. “I am very happy with the distance I was able to control with the way I played the wedge and the speed with which I moved the golf club.”

Most people were happy to get a par, aimed slightly left of the flag towards the center of the green and went ahead in an attempt to spin down the slope.

There were just 11 birdies out of 65 players on Saturday. Brooks Koepka had a par 49, 5 bogeys and 1 double bogey.

“I think most of the par 3s on this course will be happy with par. No. It’s interesting,” said Shane Lowry, who was even par at the tournament.

No. 15 had three hole-in-ones in the first two days. Mathieu Pavon and Sam Barnes both hit aces Thursday while playing for 124 yards.Matt Fitzpatrick continued from 115 yards on Friday

The fifth easiest hole with an average score of 2.820 over three rounds.

play together

LACC Golf Director Tom Gardner played as a marker for Ryan Fox, who was the first competitor of the day.

Gardner was asked by USGA Managing Director Jeff Hall earlier this week to be a marker when an odd number of players qualify. On Friday night, driving to a cocktail party, he knew he was needed.

“I’m not a competitor, but I can say that I played the setup for the U.S. Open over the weekend and was able to see what it was like, the energy of the crowd, the pins, the hardness, the rough, everything.” I can’t explain it very well,” Gardner said.

With LACC Head Golf Pro Rory Sweeney as his caddy, Gardner received plenty of cheers from club members throughout the round, especially when he teeed off the 1st hole and climbed the 18th fairway.

Fox scored a 1-under 69 for the tournament’s 1-over.

double drive

Cameron Young put the golf ball in one of the most unexpected places. Young’s tee shot at the 10th hole landed in a golf ball holder in the cart of one of NBC’s on-course reporters.

Young was able to drop the ball because it was not playable, allowing him to go up and down for par.

“But it started off as a bit of a comedy, and it ended up there. My second thought was that there weren’t any shots from it,” Young said. He scored a 2-under 68, making the tournament even par.

Fore!

Kim Si-woo was on the 15th tee when Keith Mitchell’s second shot went wide on the 14th.

The ball landed in front of Kim, then bounced up and skimmed Kim’s right side. As Mitchell was walking to the tee box, Kim jokingly fell to the ground and pretended to be injured.

“His ball was going into the rough, but it hit me and stayed on the tee box. That helped save him from a stroke,” Kim said.

Being hit might have helped Kim too, as he birdied the 15th for a 1-over 71.

Despite a rough shot, Mitchell managed to mark par on the par-5 14th with one over on the day.

“I ended up going 40 yards to the left of the flag and pulling the flag. Today was probably the worst mid-fairway iron play of my life,” Mitchell said.

golden year

Padraig Harrington is the second-oldest player to complete under-par through three rounds at the US Open. The 51-year-old Irishman scored a 3-under 67 to finish at 1-under all-time in the tournament.

Julius Boros was 53 when he was 3 under at Oakmont in 1973 after three rounds.

Harrington is looking to become the fifth player over the age of 50 to finish under par after 72 holes. He joins Steve Stricker (2017), Raymond Floyd (1993) and Boros & Dutch Harrison (1960).

“I’m going to play like I did today. I’m going to hit every shot individually,” Harrington said. “I know it’s a cliché. I just go out and see if I can mentally focus on the game.”
