WEST GROVE — This week, the Avon Grove School District Board announced an administrative restructuring.
The Board has approved the appointment of Dr. Nicole Harvey and Scott Deshon as Assistant Superintendents for the Avon Grove School District (AGSD). Harvey and De Shong will each begin their three-year term on March 1, 2022.
Harvey, a fourth-generation graduate of Avon Grove, began teaching third-year students at AGSD in 2001. She continued to work as a supervisor, principal and director in the public education system, and in 2018 she returned to AGSD as a director of education and learning. Harvey received his PhD in Educational Leadership and Management from Drexel University in 2017.
“Education is the purpose and passion of my life,” says Harvey. “We believe that literacy is the foundation of all learning and we are truly honored to serve the AGSD community.”
As an assistant superintendent, much of Harvey’s work focuses on primary school campuses in the district, including Penn London Elementary School and Avon Grove Middle School. In addition, Harvey will continue to oversee academic programs and initiatives that have a positive impact on the entire district. Knowledge of her curriculum will be a tremendous asset in her new role.
With over 28 years of experience in education from kindergarten to high school, Deshon began his career as a school counselor. He worked at the primary and secondary education level and earned a master’s degree in Educational Psychology.
While serving as a junior high school vice-principal, De Shong worked as an assistant instructor at Pennsylvania State University. DeShong became principal in 2008 and joined AGSD in 2015 as principal of Avon Grove High School (AGHS). More recently, DeShong has been working to facilitate the transition to a new high school that will open in the fall.
“Our aim is to create the best conditions for learning for the school community as a whole,” says De Shong. “As a resident of AGSD and a member of the community, it is an honor and privilege to participate in the creation of these conditions.”
In his new role as assistant superintendent, much of DeShong’s work will be concentrated on secondary campuses, including Fred S. Engle Middle School (FSEMS) and AGHS. DeShong will continue to play an integral role in facilitating the transition, along with a significant contribution to his district.
In addition to the appointment of two deputy supervisors, the AGSD Board will change the status of Dr. Christie Snead from an education and learning supervisor to a high school principal and the status of Dr. Michael Berardi on March 1, 2022. Education and learning supervisor, effective July 1, 2022 from the principal of a junior high school.
Of the 22 years in public education, Sneed has worked for AGSD for 19 years. She first worked as an AGHS math teacher and later as a coach before becoming a FSEMS vice-principal. In 2019, Sneed transitioned to an education and learning supervisor, and in 2022 she became Vice-Principal of AGHS. Sneed received his PhD in Educational Leadership and Management from Immaculate University in 2019. Her loyalty to AGSD, her district knowledge and leadership will help her new role as principal of AGHS.
Berardi began teaching high school chemistry and general science in 2001 and began working in the area in 2009 as Vice Principal and Director of Activities for AGHS. Berardi became the principal of FSEMS in 2014 and made significant contributions to the school and district. Berardi received his PhD in Educational Leadership and Management from Immaculate University in 2019. In his new role, Berardi brings a broad background in science to the education and learning sector and continues to have a positive impact on the district.
