Train derails in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania

As a precaution, homes have been evacuated in the White Marsh Township area. It is not yet clear what the train was carrying, but numerous containers are scattered around. A white substance appears to be leaking from one of the tank cars at the site. Police said in a Facebook post that the material was “silicone pellets that pose no danger to the community.” Several roads around the site are closed. There were no reports of injuries and police said there was “no known danger to the public” at this time. The track on which the accident occurred is owned by Norfolk Southern. The train is operated by CSX, and teams from Norfolk South and CSX, as well as a response team from the Montgomery County Department of Public Safety, have been dispatched to the scene. The cause of the derailment is currently under investigation. Norfolk Southern and the rail industry as a whole have come under intense scrutiny since one of their trains derailed and caught fire in Ohio in February. Around 5:00 a.m., a 40-car freight train derailed in Flowertown, sending more than a dozen cars off the tracks.

Homes have been evacuated as a precaution in White Marsh Township.

It’s not yet clear what the train was carrying, but many containers were strewn about the site, and one tank car appears to be leaking a white substance. Police said in a Facebook post. It claimed that the material was “silicone pellets that pose no danger to the community.”

Several roads in the area are closed to traffic.

There were no reports of injuries and police said there were “no known dangers to the public” at this time.

Southern Norfolk owns the track where the accident occurred. The train was operated by CSX.

Teams from Norfolk South and CSX, as well as a response team from the Montgomery County Department of Public Safety, are on the scene.

The cause of the derailment is under investigation.
