AAA offers tips and tricks to prepare your car for winter

(WKBN) – The possibility of snow in the next few days means that winter is quickly approaching.

AAA says now is the time to prepare the car for the season.

October is AAA Car Care Month. Experts say now is the time to check your car’s maintenance before it’s too late. Look at wiper blades, tires, and refills like coolant and washer fluid. But according to AAA, one of the most important things to check is your car’s battery.

“Last year, AAA East Central responded to about 265,000 battery-related calls. said AAA Safety Advisor Linda Lambert.

Locally, the AAA is hosting a free battery check at Niles’ office on Tuesday. Hours are 10am to 2pm. If your car battery needs to be replaced, it can be done onsite by a technician for an additional fee.

Tires are also very important. Lambert says you can do a tread check at home and it’s super easy, all he needs is a quarter. Take it and stick a coin into the tread with Washington’s head upside down. If you can see his head, it’s time to consider new tires.

In addition to maintenance, you should start packing a winter emergency kit for your car.

“Strobe lights, warning lights, some kind of warning triangle, especially at night when you park on the side of the road and you can see other cars approaching,” says Lambert.

This is a reminder that Saturday is National Travel Day. Both Ohio and Pennsylvania have laws that allow vehicles to slow down or move while parked on the shoulder.

Experts say it’s not just a law, it’s the difference between life and death.

AAA also reminds everyone to allow extra time on the road when winter weather hits. Slowing down also helps keep the gas in the tank.
