New York (AP) — A graduate student at Columbia University in Italy was fatally stabbed and another man was injured in separate attacks near the university’s Upper Manhattan campus, officials said Friday.
Police said in a news release that a stab wound suspect was arrested in Central Park while threatening a man with a knife.
The attack began Thursday before 11:00 pm when 30-year-old Davidegiri was stabbed in the stomach on Amsterdam Avenue near Columbia University, officials said. He was taken to a nearby hospital where he was declared dead.
Columbia University President Lee Bollinger identified Gili, a student in the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Sciences, as a victim in a campus-wide email on Friday.
“This news was just a few steps from our campus, so it’s indescribably sad and shocking,” Bollinger wrote. “On behalf of the entire Colombian community, I would like to express my deepest condolences to David’s family.”
A 27-year-old man, the victim of a second puncture wound, was found about 12 blocks south of where Gili was attacked, police said. According to police, the 27-year-old woman was taken to the same hospital and was in a stable condition on Friday.
According to police, a 25-year-old man, who matches the explanation given to the suspect’s police in two puncture wounds, knives a third man in Central Park, a few blocks away from the location of the second puncture wound. I was arrested while threatening. The charges against the suspect were pending on Friday. His name was not announced immediately.
Gili came to Colombia after studying at universities in Turin, Italy and Chicago. A Colombian spokesman said Gili was an Italian citizen.
