Auburn, Schuylkill County (WBRE/WYOU) — Christmas may be two months away, but White House officials visited the local arboretum to pick the nation’s next Christmas tree.

Evergreen Acres Tree Farm is no stranger to the Christmas tree industry, having started operations in 1953. Soon after, owner Paul Sheeler and his family began submitting trees in state and national contests.

This year, the family is celebrating a prestigious victory.

The National Christmas Tree Association has held the competition for 57 consecutive years, with the Grand Champion grower having the honor of presenting a Christmas tree from the farm to the White House.

The Shealer family has been in the National Tree and Wreath competition for over 40 years, was a former Reserved Champion, and had a tree at the Vice President’s mansion.

They are now Grand Champions for the second time. This puts a tree in the White House.

“If you live in this part of Pennsylvania, would you like to get your tree from a Grand Champion grower in 2022? The same place you put your tree in the White House?” Executive Director, National Christmas Tree Association As Tim O’Connor said:

To have a chance at Grand Champion, you must first become State Champion. The winner is eligible to compete in the national competition held in North Carolina this year.

Paul Sheerer Sr., former owner of Evergreen Acre Tree Farm, said:

Paul Shealer Junior, current owner of Evergreen Acre Tree Farm, added:

After being Grand Champions, this year’s competition may have ended for the Shealers, but it wasn’t for their tree. To find this year’s winner, White House officials took all the characteristics of trees in acres of evergreens.

“It’s perfect for the room. It’s tall, it’s wide, it smells good. It’s full of it. It just says White House,” explained Dale Haney, superintendent of the White House grounds.

Each fir is cared for like family when the Shealers pass the business down the family tree.

“Every tree on this farm is cut by my son and I, so we can do all the work and see the results,” explained Paul Sr.

The selected trees will be harvested at the end of November presentation and presented to the First Lady of the White House.
