Center County, Pennsylvania (WTAJ) – An inmate at SCI Rockview is being treated at the hospital for a bacterial illness, and the prison is currently taking extra precautions.

The prisoner tested positive for Legionnaires’ disease and was taken to hospital after suffering a high fever, according to Maria Bivens, a spokesperson for the PA Department of Corrections. The prisoner is still recovering.

Legionellosis caused by Legionella bacteria is not contagious. A type of pneumonia with symptoms such as low-grade fever, cough, malaise, shortness of breath, loss of appetite, malaise, and headache. Bivens said the water, streams and cooling towers were all treated regularly and the latest tests showed negative results for bacteria.

Bacteriological tests were performed on 4 April and 11 April. The results of that test showed he arrived on April 6th and on Wednesday May 3rd showed no bacteria in his drinking water system.

Since the positive test last weekend, we are working with the Department of Safety, the Department of Health Services and the Ministry of Health to ensure that appropriate protocols are being followed. showers and fountains will be offline until additional testing is completed. Bottled water will be provided until the fountain is safe.
