Harmar Township, PA (KDKA)-More than 12 trains derailed in Harmar Township and three were sent to the hospital on Thursday.
Officials said 17 cars derailed on Freeport Road after a collision of construction vehicles attempting to cross the railroad tracks, some of which fell into the water.
Truck drivers and people driving the Norfolk Southern Railway were taken to the hospital, but nothing was said about their condition.
There are multiple crew members on site, including several water rescue boats working to assess the damage and determine if anything is leaking from the river car. HAZMAT is also working on confusion.
PennDOT said the Freeport Road is closed in both directions.
“Late this afternoon, one of the trains bound for the east collided with a stone-carrying dump truck, causing a derailment,” Norfolk Southern said in a statement. “Thanks to the first responders for helping our crew. At this point, our personnel are on site and working with local governments to determine the next steps.”
