The humidity drops, the leaves crackle at your feet, and the sun radiates more marigold tones than the yolks. Wearing your first sweatshirt in a few months may notice a change in appetite. Rediscover the warm spice circle and the thrill of biting into the first apple of the season.
Like this summer, I drove through the county in search of food and drink that reflected a certain moment. In this case, it captures the essence of Lancaster’s fall. Part 1 of this two-part guide focuses on solids. Solids are bread crumbs that are willing to follow and maintain as a company throughout the fall. In Wednesday’s food section, we’ll look at the fall in liquid form, along with ideas for procuring things like bites, tonics, and broth. First of all
We are a family happy with apples and are known for each chop once a day in cold weather. However, the apple just has to wait, as he discovered the autumn raspberry situation at Brecknock Orchard (390 Orchard Road, Brecknock Township). Lancaster People: There are autumn raspberries in the house! I couldn’t believe my eyes when I found the yellow, red and black raspberry containers on display at the orchard market. Then, when the checkout clerk said that the orchard still offered to choose yourself for the yellow and red varieties, I was almost fainted from the excitement. Two days later, I returned to 222 North and chose 4 quarts of raspberries, pristine and sacred. I felt like it was kept secret, so I’m telling you: drop everything and do it. According to staff, as long as the weather allows, the berries you choose will last until the first week of October. But stragglers, don’t despair. I noticed a freezer full of berries in a bag for purchase.
Apple with this eye
Rose Gold is her unofficial name at Freemason Village Farm Market (310 Eden View Road, Elizabethtown). This yellow apple, with a whirlpool of pale red paintbrushes, was part of the 2015 apple breeding test, explains farmer and market manager Tad Kuntz. Snacks on hand
Frozen treats tend to be at the bottom of my autumn wish list (if any), with the exception of Sugar Whipped Bakery (77 E Main St., Lititz) maple soft serve ice cream. .. Made in-house using oat milk, this soft pastry is maple forward, but uncoordinated. Think about the observations of all the people you can make when sitting outside the store with a cutie pie cake cone.
Like many newly opened spots, the pandemic has moved me away from Empanada Gourmet (46 N. Prince St.), but I’m happy to finally meet. Opened in early 2021, the storefront space is a newly added loved one in downtown Lancaster, with an enclosed patio / courtyard perfect for autumn nosh. Owner baker Nury Vargas and Ivanna Arambillete offer a variety of ingredients to the empanadas, Uruguay’s freshly baked hand pies. 12 of them are delicious. Some personal favorites include spinach and provolone. Beans, rice and Uruguay (ground beef with spices with sofrito and olives). Chimichurri dip sauce is also legal. (Empanada Gourmet also has a stand at Lancaster Central Market.)
Cherry Hill Orchard (400 Long Lane, New Danville) apple cider donuts (including pumpkin ones!) Were one of my first fall treat discoveries two years ago, well, they remain on the list. I am. I made a pit stop in the orchard produce market just for the donuts, but I don’t want this at any other time of the year. The check-out clerk assured me that the pumpkin donuts were always on the menu, so stay tuned.
one more. Okay, maybe two.
In addition to the surely crunchy lineup of hand-rolled bagels, Megan Young once again demonstrates her talent for seasonal baking. Exhibit A: “Pie Fate”, a yogurt starring a salted caramel apple pie stuffed with Pekea Valley vanilla yogurt and small brown butter bread crumbs. She also baked bananas on masala spiced brownies, and it works perfectly. Her Wish You Well Bakery (47 N. Queen Street) opened in June, but we’re making it happier (and more girth).
